A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Tween Romance

In this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering teeth from slumbering children and placing gold under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more curious about the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the hideous creature he had imagined.

A Forbidden Bond and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for children). The goblin and fairy groups are separated from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings together. The two species portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. Fairies are said to be self-centered types, given to taking whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario requires a common enemy to join forces against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

You won’t find very many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience early romances, but are not old enough for whatever teenagers are watching in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
