Oklahoma City Thunder Kick Off Championship Defense with Thrilling Overtime Victory

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star came to the Thunder in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the winning baskets deep into double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their NBA title defense with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just mere seconds left in double OT, giving the titleholders a winning beginning.

The Rockets' big man led all scorers with 39 points and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.

But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside the game's hero.

"Determination and defense," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we do it on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, fortune or misfortune. We did enough defensive work to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."

Prior to the game, the team's championship banner was raised at their arena, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.

Oklahoma City defeated the Pacers in the previous season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their first title since the franchise moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.

The Pacers will have the opportunity to get some payback on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston return to action on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was insufficient to stop his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.

Miami's star picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 points for the visiting Warriors.

Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer James as he recovers from sciatica.
